I also write novels, and agree that ya gotta swap & mix up them juices. I like to write “cross-over” genres. Writing I am right now that is a comedic whodunit with spiritual messages.

My story revolves around a hero, I add a bad girl, then there’s a bit of mystical stuff, then true love looks like it *might* arrive. The realio-trulio history is suspect, since by a certain date, many of the kingdoms had united. So, what do I have? Historical romance? No, the real history is different. Romantic fantasy? Well, there’s a lot of killing going on, and there’s more than 1 guy and 1 girl. Romantic saga? There are quite a few bits of humor, but it is not a comedy. I’m with you on the metaphor of maraschino cherries and have no clue what the bean-counters would do so as to classify the ‘genre.’ I
don’t know what to call it!
