When I told my mother my husband and I were planning a silver anniversary trip to Charleston, she asked why we didn’t go somewhere romantic instead.
Say what, Mom?
For those of you who’ve never been there, Charleston is a jewel of a city on the South Carolina coast, renowned for a historic district that seems to have stood still in time. Breezes blow off the harbor, cooling residents who sit on their piazzas enjoying a slower way of life. Horse-drawn carriages share the streets with cars. Sweet scents waft from delightful gardens tucked behind grand houses.
Add to that my husband and I met in Charleston and spent the first two years of our married life in the second-floor apartment of a lovely house just blocks from the harbor. We took the trip, and it was perfectly romantic. Talk about memories of the way we were.
The only explanation I have for my mother saying what she did is that romance means different things to different people. How about you? What’s your idea of a romantic place to spend an anniversary?
