I tend to groan when there are cute ghosts or elves or impish clarvoyants who come along just to solve the h/h’s problems with a flick of the wrist and a bit of fairy dust. I don’t care what you call it, it’s cheating. Pixie ex machina. Don’t get me wrong. I love magic, magic realism, paranormal. But not if it’s being used to get around good old fashioned problem solving.

I have read too many books where heroines conveniently run into previously unknown magical users/creatures who have just what they need, or they suddenly get an amulet that solves the problem, or the villain that seemed so impossible to defeat has a weakness that’s practically listed in the Yellow Pages (or possibly on their FB ‘info’ page). C’mon folks, work a little harder.
