Literary Papers Tax BillAuthors Guild is urging all U.S. authors to contact their U.S. senators and representatives about the Literary Papers Tax Bill. Right now, collectors who donate manuscripts, letters and diaries of authors to universities and libraries are allowed to deduct the fair market value. However, authors who donate the manuscripts, letters or diaries are allowed to deduct only the cost of creating the materials, in other words, the paper and ink. The Literary Papers Tax Bill would redress this inequity. More information, including a suggested letter, is at: It's easy to find your Congress people online:
Frequently the congressional offices offer an online form for constituents to fill out for comment (cut and paste is a wonderful thing!) You can also call, or fax (Authors Guild recommends faxing, and ccing Authors Guild.) Surface mail is not recommended. It goes through a labyrinth to get to the offices (still checking for anthrax, etc.) and takes forever if it gets there at all.
